Me? I'm the Featured Author!

Thursday, April 7, 2011

So it is that time again, and guess what? I'm the featured author! If you are part of the writing community, it is likely that you have heard about the post that inspired this weeks Follow Friday question. If you haven't heard about the terrible author response, you can read it here in the comment section. Be warned that there is some foul language. Having said all of that, here is this weeks question:

Inspired by the spectacular melt down of Jacqueline Howett on Big Al’s Book Blog, how do you deal with a bad review?

I haven't officially published any of my works yet, but I hope that I would handle a bad review with grace. I think that the only appropriate way to respond to a review is to say thank you, and in most cases only in a private forum (email, or private message). Bad reviews hurt, even if they are handled in a professional manner. The hurt the author experiences should be kept private, and only shared with friends. Eat some chocolate cake, and watch a good movie- That is how I would handle a bad review. Probably shed a few tears to my friends or my husband, and then move on! You can always get better.

  1. Hi Nichole! Chocolate cake and a good movie - that sounds like a good antidote to a negative review! Have a good Friday!

  2. As much as people can be cruel, you can't let it get to you. It's just a persons opinion. Look at Kiss and Stephanie Meyer-they have ton's of bad reviews, but a huge fan base. Personally I think it's the fans that matter.

  3. I agree Nichole, whatever you are feeling is private.

  4. I figure I'll be too busy banging out my next project to worry overmuch about what one reviewer says. Now if it's more than one reviewer saying it I'll probably try and figure out how to fix my writing.

  5. Hah! I am also a writer with a toddler... and a baby. It's nuts here most of the time. When do you have time to write?

  6. I'm appreciating your life as a writer with kids....as I have three boys in the house. It can be hard to etch out quiet time for writing amid their boisterous energy.
As for how you'd handle the bad review....chocolate cake sounds pretty terrific to take one's mind off of troubles. Ha.

  7. Thanks for checking in with me Nichole--I am impressed that you're finding time to write! Here's the deal, anytime any of us gets a rejection letter/postcard, post it and we'll all have a drink/eat some chocolate in celebration, okay? Promise we won't melt down publicly? Have a super weekend all!
