Happy Halloween!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Last year I released a piece of Flash Fiction for Halloween. This year, I've been so busy I don't have any fun new stories to share, but I do want to wish you all a fun and safe Halloween!

I won't be dressing up this year, but I did get to see a thriller dance and videoed some of it. Please excuse the video, people were in the middle of the street even though it was marked off, so there are a bunch of people in the way. It was fun though and I'm glad I got to go! :)

Oh, and I got to see a Wookie! The munchkin was very impressed!

Are you dressing up? What will you be? Taking your little ghosts and ghouls trick or treating? I will be taking my munchkin out for a little bit tonight. Every one be safe and have a blast! Keep your eyes open for the little ghosts and ghouls running amuk!

Gifts Of The Peramangk

Friday, October 26, 2012

Today is the release day for Gifts Of The Peramangk by Dean Mayes.

I've been looking forward to this book for a long time. Dean is a talented author who writes in a way that demands to be savored. You can't rush through his books. The world he creates is real; you can feel it, smell it, taste it as you read. Definitely not something to rush through.

Look at that cover? Isn't it gorgeous? It's art. And like a good cover should, it matches the beautiful inside.

About the book:
In 1950s Australia, during the height of the divisive White Australia Policy, Virginia, a young Aboriginal girl is taken from her home and put to work on an isolated and harsh outback station. Her only solace: the violin, taught to her secretly by the kind-hearted wife of the abusive station owner. However, Virginia's prodigious musical gift cannot save her from years of hardship and racism.

Decades later, her eight year old granddaughter Ruby plays the violin with the passion Virginia once possessed. Amidst poverty, domestic violence and social dysfunction, Ruby escapes her circumstance through her practice with her grandmother's frail, guiding hand. Ruby’s zeal attracts the attention of an enigmatic music professor and with his help, she embarks on an incredible journey of musical discovery that will culminate in a rare opportunity. But with two cultural worlds colliding, her gift and her ambition will be threatened by deeply ingrained distrust, family jealousies and tragic secrets that will define her very identity.

Here is an excerpt. It's one that made me check back many times to see when the book would be ready:

The breeze rustled through the tops of the plane trees lining the street and the eucalyptus behind the buildings. The strong scent from the eucalyptus wafted through the main street catching Virginia's attention and she stopped for a moment to appreciate it. It was her most favourite smell of all. It was clean and crisp. It was home.

"Hey!"

All of the children turned then, almost simultaneously at the sound of Bobby's voice and followed his outstretched finger as a trio of vehicles came into view from the far end of the township. As they approached, the children could make out the familiar black and white colours of a police sedan leading the convoy of three, followed by a grey sedan which was in turn shepherded by a rickety looking tray truck.

They glanced at each other with a hint of nervousness.

Mrs. Stinson appeared at the entrance to her shop, having heard the approaching vehicles and she crossed over the street to stand next to Sylvia.

The vehicles slowed to a stop, drawing close to the curb on the opposite side of the street. The children watched as the engines were silenced and the three cars sat for a moment. Bobby stood, growing suspicious of the new arrivals.

The doors to both the police sedan and the grey sedan snapped open. Two constables stepped out, as did two suited men after them. They inspected their surroundings with a mixture of befuddlement and barely concealed distaste.

Virginia's attention was drawn to the two suited men who stood directly across from her.

The first man - the driver - was tall, possibly the tallest man Virginia had ever seen. Dressed in a drab, grey tweed suit and colourless bow tie, he sported spiky, balding hair that was perfectly manicured into an impeccable short back and sides. His features were sinister, with long sallow cheeks that gave his thin lips the appearance of being permanently pursed. His eyes were distorted behind thick, black rimmed glasses that sat, perched precariously, on the tip of his nose. He held a clipboard in one arm as he swiped his free hand down his jacket absently.

His colleague, who emerged from the far side of the sedan, rounding the vehicle to stand next to him, was an equally dour presence. This man was barely half his colleague's size, his head reaching to just past the top of his chest. Dressed similarly in uninspiring grey tweed, his slick, brown hair was combed severely to one side with Bryll Cream. It did not move at all in the afternoon breeze. This man sported a pair of gold rimmed glasses over small eyes and large, bushy eye brows and a short, thick moustache that gave him a perpetual scowl.

Virginia's mother glanced at Mrs. Stinson then placed her hand protectively on Virginia's shoulders, drawing Virginia close to her as the tall man set his eyes upon the group. She glanced to the old tray truck from which two more men had stepped from. She recognised one of them right away - the township's kindly local doctor, Dr. Flaherty, a man who usually wore a smile, no matter what his disposition might be. Today, however, he appeared particularly troubled. He was accompanied by a second man, unfamiliar to Virginia and her mother. He carried a battered leather Gladstone bag which was partly opened and revealed the end of a stethoscope that hung lazily down one side.

When Virginia looked up at her mother, the worry etched into her features was palpable and Virginia felt that worry seep into her pores, into her blood and it coursed through her.

The tall man adjusted the clip board he held in his arm and gestured wordlessly to the two medicos, approaching the two women who were now joined by the proprietor of the general store, the butcher immediately next door and the post mistress. The children, who had retreated a little further under the verandah of the store, watched as the man nodded to the police constables on his left.

Mrs. Stinson stepped forward through the group, puffing her chest out boldly, setting her expression like steel as the men approached.

"What seems to be the trouble Wally?" she queried Dr. Flaherty malevolently. "This is all a little theatrical, even for you."

Dr. Flaherty was unable to make his jaw move immediately and he looked down awkwardly at the bitumen.

"Routine inspection Grace," the doctor grumbled, gesturing to the two suited men. "This is Bytes of the Aborigines Protection Board. He's here to..."

"There have been reports, from this District," the tall man, Bytes, interjected abruptly, eye balling Mrs. Stinson. "...of mal-nourishment and serious illness among the blacks. It is our job under the Act to investigate any reported cases of neglect and intervene accordingly."

This book is going to make you cry. It's going to make you smile. And it's going to melt your heart. When you get finished, you're going to ask, "Nicholas Sparks, who? I read Dean Mayes."

Will there be more in the Flukes series?

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

I'm being asked a lot if there will be more books in the Flukes Series. Notice that I said series. ;)

The answer is yes. There will be more books. Will it continue Meena and Blakes story? No, not in the traditional sense. Will you see them in the other books? Possibly, at least a little. Maybe more than you think. It's hard to say at this point.

Each of the books in the series will revolve around a different couple in the Flukes universe. The next book for that series will tell Jacen's story and yes, you're going to see some familiar faces. ;)

I have at least two more books after Jacen's story, planned out, and possibly a short story or two.

Speaking of short stories, Meena will make an appearance in a Christmas anthology that is for charity. It's a cute little story about a young Meena and her father going to see Santa. It's cute and fun (I think) and very Island-Christmas-y.

So, the next question I am asked a lot, is when! When will the next Flukes book be out. Honestly, I'm not sure, but let me tell you my schedule.

I'm currently working on Suddenly Royal (and plan on doing a cover reveal soon) and hope to have that one out this winter. It's fun guys. And while I originally intended it to be New Adult, I'm thinking it may turn out to be a full fledged Contemporary Adult Romance.

THEN I'm finishing up Jacen's story. Yep, some of it is already written. And it's fun, sarcastic, and all Jacen. Oh and his mate... which I'm not going to reveal yet. ;)

I'm getting the books out as quickly as I can, but I have promised my family to take a break around Christmas. I've been on my computer for 5 months straight and I've almost forgotten what the world outside of my house is like. They've almost forgotten what I look like without sleep-deprived eyes.

Thank you to everyone that has read Flukes. I know that mermaids are not always given much credit in the paranormal world, but I happily admit to having always loved them. They are under-rated and in a way it gives them a chance to really surprise you.

My friends support me, make me feel loved. I get to do something that I absolutely love: I get to write, I get to live in my imagination and share it with other people. FLUKES OFFICIAL RELEASE DAY!

Monday, October 8, 2012

Well, it's October 8th and Flukes is live on Amazon and Smashwords!

I'm still waiting on Barnes and Noble. I'm sorry guys. I uploaded there before I uploaded to Amazon and have no idea why it's not live yet. Rest assured it I am emailing them at annoying rate.   Until then, you can purchase an epub file from Smashwords for your Nook. Here are some quick instructions on how to upload the file to your Nook:

1) Go to the Smashwords page and purchase a copy.
2) Download the ePub file.
3) Plug your Nook into your computer.
4) Drag the ePub file to document file. Voila!
5) Unplug your Nook, turn it on and go to your books. In the older model Nooks, you need to open your Document folder and your book will there, ready to read. If you have a newer Nook (like my glowlite) then it will already be in your book library.

Smashwords does have a great guide on how to upload the book, so if my directions don't make sense, then check out their page!

There is a lot of fun stuff going on today for the Flukes release!

-Today, there will be a party on Facebook to celebrate the release! (Pictures, music, games, and prizes!) Come join us from 5pm to 9pm EST. Be sure to check back on my blog this week too! I'm going to have a couple of contests soon and you won't want to miss out!

-Here is an interview that I did with the lovely, Dean Mayes. Check it out for a little behind the scenes info on Flukes!

Thank you to everyone that has helped spread the word about Flukes. I can't tell you how much it means to me. Blake and Meena are very special to me!

I've had several people ask about another book in the Flukes world and while I don't have a title yet, I can tell you that Flukes will be a series with each book revolving around a different couple. Next up is Jacen. ;)

Psst...

Sunday, October 7, 2012

Some sneaky readers found Flukes live a day early on Amazon. I will not confirm this rumor, but you can check and see here...

The Next Big Thing

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Welcome to THE NEXT BIG THING! This is part of an authors' blog tour. Each author who is tagged has the privilege of answering questions about their current work-in progress. The lovely Jessi Gibson tagged me for my upcoming novel, FLUKES.

What is the working title of your book?

Flukes will be out on October 8th! *bites nails in anticipation*

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Inspiration can strike anywhere. I was giving my toddler a bath and she was trying to learn how to float. I looked down at her and I couldn't help but think, wouldn't a baby mermaid be adorable? Bam! The idea took hold and wouldn't let go. It was so different from everything else I had worked on and I couldn't wait to dive in and bring it to life.
What genre does your book fall under?

New Adult Paranormal Romance
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Meena has worked her entire life to protect her secret, but Blake Weathering will shatter through all of her defenses just for the chance to capture her heart.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Flukes will be self-published.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Three weeks. It was by far the fastest book I've written. Flukes was waiting to pour out of me.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I honestly can't think of another book that would match up with Flukes. It's a light-hearted paranormal romance where the story focuses more on the relationship between the characters than anything else.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Like I mentioned before, the book was inspired by daughter playing in the bathtub. However, the mushy scenes are definitely inspired by my husband. ;)

What else about your book might pique the readers’ interest?

If you enjoy paranormal romance, steamy love scenes, with a good bit of humor and happy endings, this is the book for you.

Flukes Trailer and a Teaser

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Here's the short trailer for FLUKES! Isn't it awesome? I love the music. It fits perfectly.

Less than a week! I'm so excited to share this book with everyone.

Meena and Blake... *sigh*

“Right.” I nodded my head. “I hardly know you. And you don’t know me.”

“Then get to know me.” His arm moved and he reached down to grab my hand. That warm tingling slid up my skin as he rubbed my knuckles. “I want to get to know you.”
