The Romance Academy

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

You know how I mentioned that I've been pretty busy lately? Well, I'm about to get even busier.

And I'm excited about it!!!

I'm incredibly flattered to announce that I've been asked to work with The Romance Academy on a class about crafting dialogue. From September 30th to October 25th I will be hosting a four week class on dialogue.

Here is a little more about the class:
Week 1 - Listen up!
We’ll get started by identifying what makes great dialogue: the pace? Honesty? Snappy banter? All of the above? Learn how to break down speech, write realistic conversations, and avoid the dreaded info-dump so you show—not tell—your readers what’s going on.
Week 2 - Dialect, slang, and nick-names
Half the fun of language is when we mix it up a little. Learn how playing with the rules can craft distinct character voices, and what people’s choice of words says about them. Identify your character’s dialog tics, how they can add authenticity to your work.
Week 3 - In one ear...
Communication is the foundation of all good relationships… and that’s why things get so messy when it fails! You’ll learn about different communication styles, and how you can craft dramatic, compelling conversations for your characters.
Week 4 - Now shh!
Great dialogue is as much about what isn’t said, so you’ll finish up by learning about non-verbal communication, and how your characters can reveal themselves through silence, body language—and lies!

There are several great classes full of information taught by bestselling authors! Emily Snow, Melody Grace, Monica Murphy, and Cheryl McIntyre are all teaching classes. Classes on crafting characters, spicing up your sex scenes, exploring New Adult, and a Bestseller Bootcamp! There will also be marketing classes taught by the amazing KP Simmon of InkslingerPR that will offer invaluable information for authors and aspiring authors.

If you're interested in the classes, you can get an early sign up discount! So, check it out! I'm really looking forward to working with everyone and spending time with writers. This will be a great opportunity to meet others in the field that are on the same path.

Busy, busy, writer bee. An annoucement and a teaser!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

It's, um, been a while since I posted. Mainly because I've been super busy. With some cool things. Some are author-ly and some are more basic life things.

My munchkin started Preschool which is scary and awesome all at the same time. So I'm now learning to write during the day instead of keeping vampire hours. It's been a change! As a mother it's been an exciting but sad time. To see her grow into an independent child from the baby she was is both rewarding and difficult. I have to fight the part of me that wants to wrap her up and keep her safe. I'm slowly learning to hang back and let her do her own thing but I think it would be easier to fight a Dark One or a Siren.

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you may have noticed I have new author photos. The other day I had headshots taken by the lovely Krisha Craven of Krisha Craven Photography. (If you're local, you should definitely check her out. I plan on taking my munchkin soon.) She did a fabulous job. I was incredibly nervous about being the object of a 'photo shoot' but she made me feel very comfortable and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out.

I look all professional! Which is just weird.

The re-release date for Avon HarperCollins Suddenly Royal is November 26th. I'm counting down the days. We will be releasing the cover and synopsis for the second Royal book in a couple of weeks. I'm incredibly excited about this book. And if you want a sneak peek of the first couple of chapters, you'll find them in the back of the new Suddenly Royal paperback!

To tide over the Sam and Alex lovers: There is a fun interview on Sarah M. Ross's blog with Sam and Alex. So, if you're missing those two or want a little inside info about their upcoming nuptials, check it out!

**Now for some information concerning the second book, I have a small announcement. Some of you deserve private investigator licenses and have already figured this out, but The Royal Agenda has had a title change. After talking with my editor and agent, we've decided the second book will be titled,
Recklessly Royal. I'm actually VERY excited about this, because it fits Princess Catherine to a 'T'.**

I'm currently working on The Accidental Assassin to get it ready for it's October 1st release date. I'm so excited about this book and the characters. I can't wait to share them with all of you! And since I just can't wait... here's another teaser!

I jerked back around and dove for the chair where my gun was still lying. I threw the beef stew on the couch and wrapped my fingers around the pistols grip. My body was moving without thought, some kind of survival instinct kicking in. I practically floated to the bathroom door. It didn’t feel like my feet ever touched the ground. One minute I was scrabbling for my gun and the next I was pressed against the wooden door. Not sure if anyone was listening to what was going on in the house I rapped with knuckles gently.

“Owen! There’s someone here!” I hissed the words and increased my rapping when he didn’t answer right away. “Owen! Damn it! Answer the door!”

The bathroom door opened and I practically fell into his wet arms. My body slid against his in a delicious tangle of damp skin that I shouldn’t have even noticed. The shower was still running, but he’d taken the time to wrap a towel around his waist. I looked up at him, water dripping from his hair onto my face.

“There’s someone here!” I whispered as I stood up and pointed to the front door. “And in the back!” I swung my arm behind me.

Without a word he turned around and dropped the towel. My mouth fell open at the view and I felt my head tilt to the side as he bent over to grab his underwear. The man had a lot to work with. He pulled the tight shorts up and I wondered why all men didn’t wear those.

Probably because they wouldn’t all look like Owen in them.
