Happy Thanksgiving!

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

In the states the majority of us are getting ready to spend hours in a kitchen before donning our 'fat pants' and stuffing ourselves with yummy goodness. We'll spend time being thankful that we have family to argue with and friends visiting to cheer along our favorite sports teams.

To celebrate the holiday, I'm going to share a quick teaser from THE ACCIDENTAL ASSASSIN. (Less than two weeks to go!)

“We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in England, love.” He trailed a finger down the side of my cheek.

“You know what I meant.” I narrowed my eyes.

“And you compared yourself to a turkey.” A glimmer appeared in his eyes.

“Okay, I wasn’t making much sense—“

“You were rambling.” He leaned forward and kissed my chin then the tip of my nose. “But you did say something that made sense.”

“I did?” My voice was breathless as he kissed one cheek and then the other.

“Yes, my American turkey, you did.” His chuckle lifted the weight that had settled in my stomach.

What are some of your favorite things about the holidays? I love the smell of the cooking food, the bustling of people as they tried to get everything just right, that feeling of being with people that accept you for you. Bonus points if it's cold and overcast outside. My favorite feeling is the cozy sensation you have when the weather is cold and foreboding outside, but everything inside is snuggly, warm, and comfortable.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Life is funny sometimes... (and a pathetic attempt to make you not hate me)

Thursday, October 30, 2014

...But not really today.

I'm going to tell you all something that is going to make me the target of some frustrated people.

Let's rip the band aid off, shall we?

I'm moving the release date of The Accidental Assassin a month back.

Instead of November 4th, it will be live December 4th.

Let me take a moment to say that this is out of my hands. It must be done. I did everything I could to not have this happen. Everything. And it makes me sick. I know that by pushing the date back, some of you are going to be angry, frustrated, and turned off. I hate knowing that. Hate it. But, it still has to happen this way. I'm not going into the reasons as to why, but I am sorry it worked this way. All I can say is that this book is special to me. Okay, all of my books are special to me in different ways, but this one is special in it's very own different way.

Since I'm telling you bad news, let me give you a sneak peek into my thoughts. The real ones. The ones I probably shouldn't share as a writer.

As an author, it's normal to both love and hate you're own work. You love it because it's this story in your head--something that almost feels real with characters that almost feel real. A story that literally hounds your every waking thought. You hate it, and every other sentence you write, because you know you can never really do it justice. You just do the best that you can and hope that people find enjoyment in it. The Accidental Assassin makes me both giddy and nauseous at the same time. Why? Because I love it. I love it hard, guys. And I know that doesn't mean any one else will love it. That's okay. I've been published for four years now and have come to peaceful terms with the fact that everyone isn't going to like the stuff I put out. When you first publish, you sort of chant that mantra, hoping you'll believe it one day. You fake it 'till you make it. Now? I actually believe it. The world is often radically divided by opinion. That's life.

Some books you write, you finish and you think, "Okay. I did it. The End. I did all I could with my story and characters." And then there are some books you can't walk away from and the editor has to literally wrestle the manuscript out of the authors hands. You. Can't. Stop. Tweaking. (That sounds like drugs, but I'm referring to the manuscript.)

The Accidental Assassin is the book that makes me eat antacids by the package when I know people are reading it. I want them to love it. I want them to love Ava and Owen. But I also know I'm not perfect. That everyone isn't going to like my sense of humor or how Ava and Owen turn out.

Guys, I have my antacids ready. They're sitting on my desk looking at me, beckoning me with their pastel colors. I'm ready for you to read The Accidental Assassin.

I just need you to hold on for a few more weeks.

There are a ton of really great books out right now to tide you over. Here, I'll provide a few links. Make it easy for you. Check them out. You won't be disappointed. Then on December 4th, sit back and get ready to go on a wild ride with Ava and Owen.

Even The Moon Has Scars by Steph Campbell

Rellik by Teresa Mummert

All Broke Down by Cora Carmack

And in case you enjoy Christmas stories (yeah, I know, tomorrow is Halloween, but I'm a sucker for Christmas stories) here are a few you might enjoy.

On Christmas Hill (a short story) by Me

Snowed Over by Angie Stanton

Baby It's Cold Outside by Kristen Proby, Emma Chase, Jennifer Probst, Melody Anne, and Kate Meader  (I just bought this and can't wait to read it. Like I said, I'm a sucker for Christmas Romances.)

And now for my pathetic attempt to keep everyone from throwing muddy rocks at me...

(imagine a giant banner, confetti, and a loud announcer voice...)

In case you missed it, I was part of a podcast at Publishers Weekly with the fabulous Molly McAdams, Sophie Jordan, Cora Carmack, Jennifer Armentrout, and Jay Crownover.

Today I have an article on the USA Today HEA blog about addiction and how it affects families in real life and in fiction.

And Yesterday I announced the release date for THE ACCIDENTAL ASSASSIN!

Also, RECKLESSLY ROYAL (Book 2, Royal series) is currently on sale! Only $0.99 for the ebook!

November 4th--Mark your calendar!

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

It's time.

The Accidental Assassin finally has a release date.

(Yes, for real this time!)

November 4th, 2014

Cold air curled over the skin of my thigh and I snuggled closer to the heat next to me. A soft snore invaded my dreams and I grunted in annoyance. The warm pillow under my head moved, rolling me over so I was on my back and immediately yanking me out of my dreams.

“What?” I started to push him away, but his hands closed on my wrists and lifted them above my head.

“It’s been a long time since I woke up next to someone.” His voice sent goosebumps over my skin and I froze. One of his legs rested between mine and every movement made it deliciously clear how much he enjoyed having a bedmate. “I’m not used to it.”

“Wh-why is that?” His lips were so close to mine I couldn’t focus on anything else. Flashes of our kiss from the night before ran through my mind.

“Trust.” He leaned a little closer, his lips almost touching mine. “Can’t sleep next to someone who might kill you.”

“That would be difficult.” I licked my lips and tried to calm my racing heart.

“But not with you, love.” He let go of one of my wrists to run a finger along my jaw. “You’re not going to kill me in my sleep.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“It’s in your eyes.” His eyes dipped down to my lips. “The eyes never lie.”

Ava McKenzie is a creature of habit. Life is passing her by and she has nothing to show for it. She’s had the same job since she started college, she orders the same dish every time she goes to her favorite restaurant, and only reads books from authors she knows. There is nothing new or surprising in her life… until her best friend marries a man from London. When her newlywed friend asks her to house-sit while she honeymoons, Ava jumps at the chance. She thinks this could be the very thing she needs to shake up her life. Ava throws herself head first into her new lifestyle; she wants to try everything, go everywhere, and never get stuck in a rut again. Of course, offing a man in a car garage hadn’t been one of the things on her list to try.

Owen Walker spends every day in a new place with a new case. As one of the most renowned assassins in the world, he has his choice of marks—and he’s never failed in a mission. When a new hit takes him back to his hometown, he looks forward to spending time somewhere familiar. What he isn’t expecting is to help an attractive, confused American woman find out how she’s ended up on a hit man’s list.

As Ava and Owen dodge bullets, will they be able to escape their undeniable attraction to each other? Or will all of that chemistry blow up in a shower of hot and dangerous sparks?

Want to know a little more about Owen? Check out this Imagine Dragons song. It fits him perfectly

The Reluctant release of Reluctantly Royal

It's finally here.

August 26th, 2014.

The day that I get to share Max with everyone. The day my book-baby hits the shelves around the country. It's the day that finishes the Suddenly series.

It's also the day of rolling black-outs in my town.

Of all the days, this was not a good day for mass black-outs.

For instance, I've been trying to make this post since 8am this morning. It's now after 3pm and I'm typing quickly to try and finish before the power goes back out.

Let's just say today has been an adventure. It started like any normal day. I stumbled out of bed, dressed the munchkin, made a lunch, and drove her to school. I got home just in time for the second black out to hit. Confused I called the power company and received some lame information which didn't tell me anything. After a little digging I found out that one of the nearby substations had a fire last night, thus rolling black-outs.

I drove all over town to find internet (and a working air conditioner). Almost as soon as I set foot in an establishment the power went off. I decided I was cursed and eventually settled for eating lunch in my car at the pick up line of my daughters school. (At least I had AC!)

But! Now the power is on (hopefully for good) and I can finally share my excitement with everyone.

Isn't he swoon worthy?

Here is an excerpt so you can see exactly why I think so...
As I turned to leave the room, my eyes fell on a sketch pad and I couldn’t help myself. Sitting back down in the chair I flipped it open and smiled at the drawings inside. Marty had promise for such a young kid. Turning to a blank page, I glanced around and searched for a pencil. Charcoal would be best, but pencil would do.
I started with the lines of his forehead, the curve of his impish nose, the roundness of his cheeks. I was lost in the sketch, enjoying the shadows, the tenderness in his expression, working to capture that moment of utter innocence.
“That’s beautiful.” Her voice was soft.
I looked up from what I was doing, not surprised that she had snuck up on me. When I’m lost in a project, the world disappears; the only thing I’m aware of are the layers of the project I’m working on.
“He’s a good subject.” I turned back to the paper and finished up the shading of the blanket.
“Only because he’s asleep and not moving.” Her quiet laugh sent shivers over my body.
“That does help.” I smiled up at her. “But it’s the contrast. The contrast of him awake versus him asleep. He looks so young right now, so innocent.”
“What do you mean?” She leaned closer to look at the picture.
“He’s so mature, quick-witted.” I whispered the words. “But here he is, looking like the child he is.”
“His teachers say that,” she said. “That he’s quick to pick things up.”
“I’d say so.” I turned and handed her the sketch pad. “I hope you don’t mind that I drew him. The light and shadows were too perfect to resist.” Sort of like her right now. The way the moonlight glinted in her eyes and shone along her hair. Her perfect features would make any artist ache to draw them. Her pixie nose, the heavy eyelashes, the curve of her body hinted at by the oversized sweater she had wrapped around herself. It made my palms itch. Partly because I just wanted to touch her, to see if she would taste as sweet as she looked in that moment.
“Thank you for keeping him entertained.” She stood up. “Can I keep this?”
“Of course.” I stood up and stretched. Her eyes swept over my chest and then back up to my face. Maybe I wasn’t the only one tempted to touch. I hated to admit it, but I had a flare of pride. “I enjoyed hanging out with him.”
I was surprised to realize I meant it. I never would have thought spending time with a six-year-old would have been enjoyable.
“Looks like he did too.” She moved away from the door and I followed her into the hallway.
“Did you get everything settled?”
“I think so.” She frowned.
“What’s wrong?” Her expression worried me.
“Granddad would have hated a large ceremony.” She sighed and headed for the stairs. “But I guess that as a duke there are some things that have to happen.”
“I don’t blame your grandfather.” I followed behind her. “I would want a small ceremony, not to be made into a production.”
“I’m starting to think you don’t like any type of production.” She looked at me over shoulder.
“Not really, no.” I wasn’t going to lie. “I don’t like being the focus, being the center of attention. It makes me uncomfortable.” I wasn’t going to lie, but I hadn’t intended to tell her so much about me.
“And yet you agreed to help me with my grandfather’s funeral.” She turned to me at the bottom of the stairs and set the sketch pad on a table. “Why?”
I stared at her for a minute, enjoying the way her eyes looked up at me, the tilt of her chin, the way her hair cascaded around her shoulders. “I don’t know.”

Unable to help myself, I reached out and touched her cheek with my fingers. Her pupils dilated and she inhaled softly. With one thumb I traced the dip under her plump bottom lip. Her hand reached up to trace my jaw and she took a step closer to me.
“You should be running from me as fast as you can.” She whispered the words. “I’m everything you don’t want.”
“I’m not so sure.”
“I live for the spotlight, it’s my food.” Her eyes were half lidded as she edged closer to my mouth. “And you’ve seen my family. I’m trouble, Max.”

Did I care? I wasn’t sure I was capable of making a real decision as her smell wrapped around my senses. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to taste her, to touch her, to press her against my body. To hear her say my name again.
Dipping my head, I grazed her lips with mine and I was lost. On a sigh, she leaned into me and wrapped her hands around my neck. Tilting her head back, I brought my mouth to hers carefully, softly, tasting. I wanted to deepen the kiss, to hear her moan, to feel the way her body could wrap around mine, but I kept it soft, sweet, and simple. She was in such a hard place, she needed to be protected, treasured by someone.
And right now, I was that person.

Romantic Times Convention in New Orlean? Why yes, I'd love to go!

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Next week I will be in New Orleans for the Romantic Times Convention with roughly a billion other authors. I'm looking forward to so much about next week! I can't wait to try all of the Cajun food. Okay, not all of it, because I'm not big on oysters or things that set my face and stomach on fire, but all the rest? Sign me up. I'm also dorkily looking forward to all of the history in NOLA. I've never been before and I can't wait to see the old buildings and experience the combination of so many different heritages.

I'm also REALLY, SUPER-DUPER, RIDICULOUSLY excited about seeing certain authors. I'm not going to name all of them because I will actually be doing events with some of them. (OH MY UNICORNS. Lil' ol' me! With people that I read before even dreaming of publishing a book. Okay. That's a lie. I've always dreamed of having published books, but you know what I mean.) I will go ahead and say that I am head over heels stoked to find out that Tamora Pierce will be speaking on some of the panels. You guys? YOU. GUYS! Tamora Pierce got me through 7th grade. My name took up most of the library card for the book Song of the Lioness. (For you whipper snappers, a library card was this little piece of paper in a pocket at the back of a book. The librarian would fill in your name and the date you checked the book out. Alas, it's all done digitally now. I bet that saves librarians from a ton of paper cuts!)

I'm going to admit here, on my blog, for the world to see, that I may actually have an out of body experience if I get to meet Tamora Pierce. I'm serious. I'm likely to bust into tears or stare at her unable to form coherent words. So, if you see me in a puddle somewhere, cuddling a book or two--or five--kindly step around me.I'll be fine eventually. I could go on forever, but let's just say that Tamora Pierce and Anne McCaffrey taught me how to write strong heroines. I will forever be in their debt.

Okay. I just went off on a three paragraph tangent. But as you can see, I'm truly excited. And humbled to be participating/hosting events with some big names. Good Lord, I hope I don't say anything stupid.

So, without further ado, here is my (rather busy) schedule for RT. I'd love it if you come see me! I'm bringing all sorts of goodies!

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Do you want to read a bonus scene from Sam and Alex's honeymoon? Are you just dying to read Max's story in RELUCTANTLY ROYAL? Well, Avon and I have come up with something fun for you!

If you’ve had a chance to check out RECKLESSLY ROYAL, by now you’ll know that throughout the book Sam and Alex are on their honeymoon. And we got to missing them while they were gone, so we asked Nichole Chase if she’d be so gracious as to give us just one more glimpse into their Happy Ever After. She decided to write a delightfully sweet and deliciously sexy scene from their first days…and nights…as a newlywed couple! We’re all set to release this bonus scene to readers once RECKLESSLY ROYAL has reached 200 reviews on Goodreads.  So once you’ve finished Cathy and David’s story, please share your thoughts with the world!
But wait, there’s more!  If you tweet or Facebook the link to your review and tag Nichole, she’ll randomly pick ten people on APRIL 11 to win signed copies of SUDDENLY ROYAL and one grand prize winner to get an early read of RELUCTANTLY ROYAL.
Prizes are US only.
Happy Reading!

RECKLESSLY ROYAL IS HERE... and I' m feeling mushy.

Thursday, March 27, 2014

This week has been exciting, scary, and surreal. Why? Well, for the very first time one of my babies is out in the big world all on it's own. This isn't a test. It's time for Cathy and David to tell their story. As the author that is incredibly scary. You'd think that after releasing... (pulls off shoes so I can count fingers and toes...) my 8th... or 9th... story I'd be kind of used to it all. Nope. Not at all. It's nerve wracking and intense in a lot of ways. I don't think that part will ever go away.

It's also INCREDIBLY exciting. People are buying my book, reading my story, and (hopefully) falling in love with David and Cathy as much as I did! It's so much fun to be able to talk with the readers about their favorite parts, favorite characters, and not so favorite characters. I could talk books all day and this is the best part of my job.

Why has this week been surreal? Well, it's the continuation of a series that I love... one that I wrote mainly for myself. I never, ever would have thought that it would do what it has done. In fact, I was convinced that most people would think it was too happy. Boy was I glad to be wrong! The surreal part though, comes from seeing my books--my babies--with my name on them in actual stores. Maybe that seems silly. It certainly doesn't make me more of an author than I already was, but it is a dream come true. When I was young you couldn't find books online... partly because there wasn't an online until much later... but let's not focus on that. The point is, the only way for people to find an authors book was in a store. And they still do.

While in college I worked at Walmart. It was challenging at times, but I made some wonderful friends. (Friends in fact that now beta read my work.) I started as a cashier, worked at the service desk, and eventually became a Customer Service Manager. On my breaks I would take my vest off and peruse the book aisle. Needless to say a lot of the money I made working at Walmart was handed right back to them to feed my reading addiction. Flash forward to this week. I needed a new toothbrush and some milk. I picked up my munchkin from school and turned toward Walmart (the main store in the small town where I live). Taking a deep breath as we passed the book aisle, I stopped and perused the shelves--just like I had done for years.

Would it? Could it be there? My book?

At first I thought I wasn't so lucky. Feeling a little let-down (but pretending that I wasn't for the munchkin) I started to turn back down the aisle and head for the milk. That's when I saw it. Sitting on the top shelf--next to a NORA ROBERTS book--was my baby. I swear she was smiling at me.

I had a flutter moment where I looked around wildly to see if there was anyone I knew in shouting distance. I giggled. I told a random person walking by, "That's my book!" (Yes, I'm a dork. But if you've been following me, you already know that.) I picked it up and looked at it. I flipped it over and looked at the back. I touched the raised font and smiled back at Cathy. I had seen the paperback already, but this was different. I had found her out in the wild.

Do you see how this was a moment where my life had come full circle? I had worked full-time at that very store while going to college and now THEY WERE CARRYING MY BOOKS. My books. On the racks that I used to check every week. The very racks where I bought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Twilight, and NORA ROBERTS books. Racks that carried and still carried some of my favorite authors. Maybe it's karma or kismet. I put in my time at Walmart and now they carry my books.

So, yeah. Mushy.

The first time I saw my book in a Barnes and Noble, I cried. Someone sent me a picture and I sat in my office and ugly-cried. Great big hiccups and laughing were involved. I couldn't stop. Thank goodness no one was awake. I probably would have scared them.

Thank goodness I didn't do that in the middle of Walmart. So instead, I did what anyone else would do... I took selfies.

The Munchkin was just as excited!

Look at me! Next to Nora Roberts and Debbie Macomber!

Thank you to Avon, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books a Million, iTunes, my agent, editors, and publicists. And most importantly, thank you to my readers. None of this would be possible without you.
If you still haven't gotten your copy of Recklessly Royal, you can buy it here:

If you have a picture with one of my books, I'd love to see it! I think I might start a collage on the website. What do you think? (If you're looking for one in store, my Walmart only had two copies left and the local Books a Million only had one!)

Reluctantly Royal Cover Reveal! SURPRISE!

Monday, February 10, 2014

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to Max, er, I mean the cover for

Maxwell Jameson Trevor, prince of Lilaria, hates his royal role. Despising the limelight, he takes solace in his art studio and steers clear of any drama. But when one of the newly discovered royals passes away, Maxwell's brother Alex asks him to break the news to the old man's granddaughter. Though he hates to be the bearer of doom and gloom, he doesn't want the poor girl to find out from the tabloids. For Maxwell knows all too well how devastating that could be.

Coming from a broken home and modest background, newly ordained Lady Meredith Thysmer has seized her chance to make a better life for herself and her son. She's not afraid to use her best assets to get what she wants. But when the unpretentious yet devastatingly handsome Max delivers his news, her plans for the future come crashing to a halt. The Dark Betrayal Trilogy is on SALE!

Saturday, January 25, 2014

For this weekend, I've reduced the price for the Dark Betrayal Trilogy omnibus... which means you can get all THREE ebooks for only $0.99! This trilogy has a soft spot in my heart. It's the first books I ever published and I still love the story and adore the characters.

Mortal Obligation (Book 1):
Ree will face the darkest form of betrayal before the year is out.

Seventeen year old Ree McKenna has three goals: get through high school, convince her crush she is more than his best friend's little sister, and save money for college. Fate, though, has other plans for her. After the untimely death of her older brother, Ree is haunted by dreadful nightmares and terrifying visions. To make matters worse, Ree has started to suspect that something dangerous is stalking her from the shadows.

A night full of frightening surprises leaves Ree with unsettling news. Gifted by the gods with unusual powers, she must devote herself to a battle that could very well lead to not only her death, but the demise of everyone she knows and loves. After all, Ree is the only mortal standing between the Earth and utter darkness.

Mortal Defiance (Book 2):

One short week turned Ree McKenna's life upside down. Not only does she have the weight of the world on her shoulders, but she still has to juggle homework, a job, and a curfew. While Ree tries to find her footing amidst the chaos, the Dark Ones and their champion are busy hunting down any humans that have a touch of the gods running through their veins. Allies have turned into foes, and enemies have become stronger.

The world is growing darker, but the passion between Ree and two irresistible guys blazes hotter. Romantic ties from a past life will threaten to break Ree away from the love of her life and will cloud her judgment. In order to follow her heart, Ree will break rules put in place by the gods, risking her life and the lives of her friends in an act of Mortal Defiance.

Immortal Grave (Book 3):

While darklings ransack the city, Ree and her friends will learn the depth of the gods' manipulations. Unsure of who is really on their side, Ree must accept her destiny and assume the role of leader. The stakes are higher than they've ever been. Death is waiting for them in every shadowy corner. People will die, love will be tested, and the fate of the world will be decided--one way or the other.

No more running.

No more hiding.

The final battle is here

Audio Books? Audio Books!

Thursday, January 9, 2014

I've had a bunch of people ask me if the Royal Series would be in audio. And, well, I have an answer for you now.

On March 25th, 2014 (Yes, the same day that Recklessly Royal will be in bookstores) the audio books for Suddenly Royal and Recklessly Royal will be available for purchase where audio books are available. (Audible, Amazon, iTunes, etc.)

This is such a surreal thought to me. I still find it weird that people read my books, but to think of them listening to them? Yeah. Crazy town! In a good way! Just... so hard to imagine. :) And I have a heck of an imagination.

So there you have it folks. My books--my babies--will be available in audio book form in just a couple of months. Eeep.

Thank you to everyone that has made this possible. The last six months have been some of the craziest, strangest, exciting months of my life.
